B1 Preliminary for Schools: the exam that shows that students have mastered the basics of English

The B1 Preliminary for Schools exam is made up of four papers – Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking – developed to test students’ English skills. You can see exactly what is included in each paper below, with the same formats applying to both the paper-based and Digital exams.

Cambridge B1 Preliminary for Schools consists of 4 tests:

Reading

45 minutes

The B1 Preliminary for Schools Reading paper has 6 parts and 32 questions. There are different types of texts and questions.

This paper accounts for 25% of the total mark.

Writing

45 minutes

The B1 Preliminary for Schools paper has two parts. You have to show that you can write different types of text in English.

This paper accounts for 25% of the total mark.

Listening

30 minutes

The B1 Preliminary for Schools Listening paper has 4 parts and 25 questions. For each part, you have to listen to a recorded text or texts and answer some questions. You hear each recording twice.

The Listening test accounts for 25% of the total mark.

Speaking

10-12 minutes per pair of candidates

The B1 Preliminary for Schools Speaking test has four parts and you take it together with another candidate. There are two examiners. One of the examiners talks to you and the other examiner listens.

The Speaking test accounts for 25% of the total mark.
