Supporting every learner with a more accessible exam experience
Cambridge English Qualifications Digital are designed not only for convenience and speed — but also with accessibility at their core. Whether a candidate has a disability, a specific learning difficulty like dyslexia or simply benefits from certain adjustments, the Digital format offers built-in tools that make exams more accessible.
Why accessibility matters
Taking an English language exam can be a life-changing opportunity, whether for study, work or personal achievement. No learner should face unnecessary barriers that prevent them from demonstrating their true ability. Cambridge English Qualifications Digital help to reduce these barriers by giving candidates greater control over how they take their test.
Accessibility features built into the Digital exams platform
The following features are available to all candidates by default, without the need to request them in advance.
During the exam, candidates can choose from three text sizes: regular, large or extra-large. There is no need for magnifiers or specially printed papers, as adjustments can be made instantly within the exam platform.
The platform includes built-in contrast modes to support candidates with visual stress, dyslexia or low vision.
These include:
- Black text on white (default)
- White text on black
- Yellow text on black
These settings can easily be changed during the exam.
Each candidate has their own set of headphones and can adjust the on-screen volume at any time during the Listening paper. This ensures clear sound quality and supports candidates with hearing impairments or attention difficulties.
All writing is done digitally, enabling candidates to type their responses. This is particularly beneficial for learners with handwriting difficulties or motor impairments, or for those who prefer to type. It also makes editing and reviewing answers easier.
The Digital exam platform enables candidates to answer questions directly on screen, eliminating the need for answer sheets or transfers.
Features include:
- A clear navigation bar.
- Keyboard-accessible movement (e.g. using the tab key).
- No mouse dependency.
This streamlined experience benefits all candidates, particularly those with visual impairments or fine motor difficulties.
