FAQs
General information
Find out all about our exams, recognition, formats and special conditions.
We offer and administer the full range of Cambridge English Qualifications exams, from Young Learners (YLE) to C2 Proficiency (CPE), as well as Linguaskill, a flexible and adaptive test of English language ability.
To make sure you choose the right exam, you can assess your level of English with a free 25-question test. This will help you decide which Cambridge English qualification best suits your level and goals.
The difference between the standard version of the test and the 'for Schools' version lies in the content of the tests. In the 'for Schools' version, the topics and situations are adapted to the interests and experiences of children and young people. For example, in a comprehension task, the context might be related to buying a cinema ticket rather than buying a car.
However, the level of difficulty is the same in both versions and the certificate awarded is identical, as the 'for Schools' label does not appear on the certificate.
Yes, it is possible to request special arrangements for exams in case of disability or learning difficulties. Accommodations such as extra time, the use of assistive technology or other adjustments can be granted according to the candidate's needs, provided that a supporting medical certificate is submitted at the time of registration.
For more information about the adjustments available and how to apply, please visit Special Arrangements.
No, as an exam centre we only administer and organise Cambridge English exams.
However, we do have a candidate support website, Exams Owl, where you can find a wide range of preparation resources such as study materials, sample exam papers and useful tips.
Cambridge English certificates are based on the levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and do not have an expiry date.
However, each organisation, company or university can set their own criteria and decide how long they will accept a certificate as valid as part of their admissions or recruitment process.
You can check the equivalence between the Cambridge English exams and the levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) on this page. It shows how the Cambridge English exams correspond to the CEFR levels A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2.
Different varieties of English are accepted in the Cambridge English exams, including British and American English. There is no 'right' or 'wrong' way to speak English.
The Cambridge English Listening exams cover a wide range of accents, so it is advisable to practise listening and reading different types of English. Also, once you have chosen a way of spelling a word during the exam, you should stick to that spelling throughout the exam.
You do not need any knowledge of other subjects to take the Cambridge English exams. The exams are an assessment of your level of English and focus solely on reading comprehension, grammar and vocabulary, listening, writing and speaking. It is therefore not necessary to study subjects other than the language.
Yes, Cambridge English qualifications are internationally recognised and highly regarded throughout the world. Universities, employers and government bodies in many countries accept our qualifications as official proof of your level of English, making them an excellent tool for studying, working or emigrating abroad.
For more information about the recognition of Cambridge English exams, please see the following page.
During the Listening test, the recordings are played twice. The first time they are listened to in full, and the second time they are replayed to allow you to listen more carefully and to take notes or check your answers.
There is no automatic penalty for exceeding the maximum word count in the Writing section. Examiners will assess the whole response against the 4 specific assessment criteria: Content, Communicative Achievement, Organisation and Language.
However, an excessively long text may be penalised for lack of coherence or for deviating from the topic (in terms of Organisation and Content). On the other hand, a text that is too short (below the minimum word count) may not provide enough information for a full assessment in terms of Content and Communicative Achievement.
The tests are marked by a team of experts who have been specially trained for this purpose. Teachers are not allowed to mark their own students, either in the oral or in the written test, in order to ensure impartiality and objectivity in the marking.
Yes, we offer an exclusive discount for undergraduate students at public universities in Spain, Andorra and France. To access this discount, it is necessary to present a supporting document at the time of enrolment.
Digital exams
Explore our computer-based exams, their format, features and requirements.
Digital exams are electronic versions of Cambridge English exams that are taken on a computer rather than on paper. These exams offer a more interactive experience, allowing candidates to answer questions directly on a digital platform, while maintaining the same standards and requirements as traditional exams. Results are usually faster and the registration process is just as easy.
The main difference between the two versions is the format in which the tests are taken. In the Digital version, candidates answer directly on a computer, which has several advantages:
- Faster results, in 5-10 working days instead of 4-6 weeks for the paper version.
- Better time management as there is no need to transfer answers to a separate sheet of paper.
- Listening with your own headphones, providing a clear and personalised sound.
- Adjustment of the audio volume according to the candidate's preferences.
- Accessibility adjustments, such as changing the font size and colour.
- Easy editing of text, with the ability to copy, paste and delete without striking through.
- Automatic word counter, which makes it easier to control the length of the writing.
Thanks to these advantages, the Digital version allows for a more dynamic and efficient exam experience.
For a detailed comparison of the Digital and Paper-based exams, please visit this page.
To help you familiarise yourself with the format, we have video tutorials available on each level page on Exams Owl to show you how the tests are administered and what to expect on test day.
For more information, please visit the Digital exam features page.
No, although the exams are in digital format and can be taken on a computer, they are taken in person at authorised centres.
You do not need to bring your own computer or headphones, as the exam centres will provide all the equipment you need to take the test.
Yes, you can take notes during the Digital exam. We will provide you with paper and pen so that you can plan and take notes on each component of the exam. In addition, the exam syllabus includes tools that allow you to underline text and take notes directly into a digital notebook. Remember to leave all paper in the exam room when you are finished.
Yes, you can go back and change your answers at any time before the end of the test. This will help you manage your time and make sure you are happy with your answers.
At the top of the screen you will see a timer showing how much time you have left. When you have 5 minutes left, the timer will change from showing just minutes to showing minutes and seconds. Also, when you have 1 minute left, the background will change colour and the text will turn red to let you know.
The Speaking test is the same as the paper-based test. You will take it with one or two other candidates. There are two examiners: one will speak to you, while the other will listen and take notes.
Linguaskill
Discover Linguaskill's format, results, validity and how to register or prepare.
Cambridge Linguaskill is a computer-based, multi-level test of English covering levels B1 to C2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). It is an adaptive test, which means it adapts the questions and calibrates your level of English according to your answers.
The test is divided into modules: Writing, Speaking, Reading and Listening. You can choose the modules you want to take according to your specific needs or requirements.
We offer two ways to take the Linguaskill exam: online, from the comfort of your own home, or in person at an authorised centre.
You can register for the exam via the Dates and Registration section of our website.
- For the face-to-face version, you can filter by exam type and select the date that best suits you.
- For the online version, you will find a box at the top of the page where you can complete your registration.
The results will be available online between 48 and 72 working hours after you have taken the exam. You will only be able to view them via the email we send to the address you provided when you registered.
Yes, you can retake part of the exam and combine your results to achieve the required score. To do this, you must have taken all modules at the same test centre and within 6 months of each other.
Your score report can be verified by companies and organisations through the Linguaskill verification website. There they can confirm the authenticity of your results.
We can provide a certified copy of the result report for candidates who have taken their exams through our centre. You will need to bring the printed document with you.
The Linguaskill test result does not have an expiry date. However, each institution, company or university can set their own requirements regarding the validity of the test for their processes.
Click here for more information about the international recognition of Linguaskill.

You will need to bring the following to the exam
- A valid, physical form of identification (ID card or passport).
- Confirmation of Entry (CoE), either printed or in digital format.

Please note that all electronic devices will be confiscated at the start of the Writing and Speaking sections.

No, the use of dictionaries, whether physical or digital, is not permitted during the exam. All Cambridge English exams are conducted without the support of external materials to ensure a fair and accurate assessment of candidates' language skills.
If you experience a significant problem during the exam, you should report it to the staff on the day of the exam.
We also recommend that you report it to our centre as soon as possible so that we can take the necessary steps to resolve the situation appropriately.

Cambridge English exam results are made up of an overall score and a score for each of the areas of the exam (Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking, etc.). Depending on your score, you will be assigned a specific level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), which will let you know how well you have mastered the language.
If you have specific questions about your result, please do not hesitate to contact us for further advice.
It is not possible to view marked papers or receive the papers you have completed during the exam. We are also unable to provide detailed feedback on individual questions or errors made. This is in accordance with the Cambridge English regulations, which you can view here.
On completion of a Cambridge English exam, you will receive a Statement of Results. This document gives you useful information about your performance in the exam and is the only feedback you will receive about your performance.
If a candidate disagrees with their Cambridge English exam result, they can request a review within 30 days of the result being published. Result queries must be made through the examination centre and are made up of two separate stages:
An automatic correction process for Reading, Use of English and Listening (clerical check), which takes between 5 and 10 working days to complete.
A full correction of the written part of the exam (including Listening correction where relevant, but not Speaking correction). This revision is not available for A2 Key and A2 Key for Schools exams. To request a Stage 2 revision, the candidate must have previously completed the Stage 1 revision and received the results. The turnaround time for a Stage 2 revision is between three and four weeks.
It is important to note that during these processes, the candidate will not receive detailed information about their exam, nor will the original exam paper be returned to the candidate or the school.
If you are interested in requesting a review of your results, you must inform us in writing, stating your full name, candidate number, the examination taken and the date of the session.
From January 2015 a new system of reporting exam results will be used, known as the Cambridge English Scale. This system gives more detailed information about your performance. If you took an exam before 2015 and want to convert your score out of 100 to the current scale, you can use the Scale Score Converter, a Cambridge English score conversion tool.
Yes, you can re-register to take the exam in the same year. There is no limit to the number of times you can take the exam, but please note that you may have to wait for the next available session depending on the availability of dates. To ensure that you get a place, we recommend that you register as early as possible.
Cambridge English exams are recognised by almost 25,000 universities, employers and governments around the world. Cambridge English qualifications open doors to higher education, increase your employability and, because they are globally recognised, extend your opportunities for international study and employment.
You can find out more about these qualifications and the institutions and organisations that recognise them on the following page.
No. The overall grade is calculated by taking the average of the results obtained in each of the tests. For example, if a candidate takes B2 First, it is possible to obtain the B2 level certificate even if he/she obtains a lower score in one of the skills, provided that he/she compensates with a good score in the other tests.
If you do not achieve the required score for the level at which you took the exam, you will receive a certificate with the grade corresponding to the closest level achieved according to the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) scale. For example, if you take the C1 Advanced exam and score in the B2 range, you will receive a certificate marked B2 instead of C1.
If you wish to be certified at the level you were aiming for, you can retake the exam at a later date. There is no limit to the number of times you can take the Cambridge English exams. We recommend that you review the areas in which you need to improve and prepare properly before trying again.
If you achieve a score that corresponds to the next level you have taken, you will receive a certificate for the exam you have taken with the higher level indicated. For example, if you take the B2 First exam and score 180 points or more, you will receive a B2 First certificate indicating C1 Advanced proficiency. This certificate does not replace the C1 Advanced certificate, although some institutions or organisations may accept it as equivalent.
Exam results are published within specific time windows, the deadline for which is specified in the Confirmation of Entry document. If your result is not yet available and the window has not closed, do not worry; we ask that you wait until the end of the window.
If your result is still 'Unavailable' after the deadline, please contact our centre to inform us of the problem and to investigate what has happened.
Thousands of organisations rely on Cambridge English certificates to accurately reflect candidates' abilities. Therefore, no irregular behaviour will be tolerated during the exam and results will not be published if there is a reasonable suspicion that the result does not reflect the candidate's actual ability. All examination centres are trained to identify cases of malpractice, and Cambridge English uses sophisticated statistical methods to detect unusual patterns in answers.
- Where irregularities are suspected, exam papers are reviewed by both internal Cambridge English staff and external experts (consultants not employed by Cambridge English). Decisions are based not only on statistical data but also on the judgement of experienced professionals.
- It can take up to two months to investigate a case of suspected malpractice and this may cause delays in the publication of results. We understand that delays can cause frustration, but we hope that candidates understand the importance of a thorough investigation to ensure that the results are reliable and accurately reflect their knowledge of English.
- It is important to note that until an investigation into alleged malpractice is complete, the candidate is not formally accused of anything and, in fact, may make representations to help the Board make a proper assessment of the case.
If you are involved in a case of suspected misconduct, we recommend that you follow the instructions we have provided to expedite the resolution of the case. You can find more information about misconduct here.
If you have taken one of our exams and would like to share your results with an institution or organisation, you can do so via the Results Service for Candidates portal. Please follow the steps below:
- First, log in to the Results Service for Candidates portal with your ID and the password you chose when you registered.
- Once logged into your account, click on 'Send my result'.
- The next step is to find the organisation you want to send your results to. Start by typing the name of the organisation in the search bar. Select the correct organisation from the drop down list and click 'Send my result'.
If a list of organisations with the same name appears (e.g. Kings College), make sure you select the correct organisation for the country or city (e.g. Kings College - Cambridge).
You can view the status of your results (read/unread) by navigating to the Shared Results tab.
Certificates
Details of when and how to receive your certificate, request changes or order a replacement.
The availability of certificates varies depending on the type of exam you have taken:
- For Digital exams, certificates are usually available one month after the exam date.
- For paper-based exams, certificates are usually available two months after the exam date.
These dates are published in the 'Results and Certificates' calendar on our website.
As soon as your certificate is available, we will notify you by email and give you two options to choose from:
- Pick up the certificate at our office at no additional cost.
- Receive your certificate by courier service. The cost of this service varies depending on the destination and must be paid in advance.
If you have taken the exam through a school or academy, please note that the certificate will be sent directly to your centre.
Unfortunately we work with the deadlines set by Cambridge English and we cannot speed up the process to get the certificate before the scheduled date. While your official certificate is being issued by Cambridge English, Exams Catalunya can provide you with a provisional certificate and email it to you in PDF format as soon as your results are available.
To do this you will need to email us the following documents:
- Identity card or passport on both sides (this can be a good quality photo).
- Confirmation of Entry (CoE) document, sent 10 days before the exam.
- Statement of Results, which is the PDF you download after viewing your results.
We also recommend that you consider using Cambridge's free online Results Verification Service to share your results. This service allows private companies or public bodies to reliably verify a candidate's result and confirm that they actually hold the qualification they claim to have.
It is not necessary to make an appointment to collect your certificate. You can come at any time during our opening hours, Monday to Friday 9 - 17h.
Please note that you will need to complete the form you received in the post informing you that your certificate is available. Also remember to bring the required documentation or, if someone else is collecting it on your behalf, the relevant authorisation and documentation.
No, our only office is at Calle Freixa, 5-9, 08021 Barcelona.
Our opening hours are Monday to Friday, 9 - 17h.
At Exams Catalunya we are committed to providing a good service to our candidates. Please see below the Cambridge English policy on the retention of old certificates accepted during the official exam registration process:
Cambridge English Regulations (page 8, section 1-2): Cambridge English certificates are important documents containing several security features to make it difficult for them to be forged. Centres must forward Certificates to candidates as soon as possible after receiving them from Cambridge English. Depending on the exam, this is 2-4 weeks after the results are released. Because of the value placed on certificates, Centres may require candidates to collect and sign for them in person. Centres may destroy unclaimed certificates after one year.
What happens if more than a year has passed?
We understand that this is a short period of time, so we try to keep certificates for as long as possible to ensure that candidates can collect them. However, once this period has elapsed, we cannot guarantee their availability.
We recommend that you contact us for confirmation. To speed up the process, please provide the following information:
- Full name
- Date, place and level of exam taken
- Candidate number (optional)
- Your date of birth
For security reasons, there is no digital version of the official certificate. However, you can download your Statement of Results from the Candidate Results Portal.
It is mandatory to bring the documents in physical form to verify your identity.
If someone is collecting the certificate on your behalf, they must present
- A power of attorney signed by you.
- A photocopy of your identity card.
- The original identity document of the authorised person.
If you are in any doubt as to what documentation is required, we recommend that you contact us before travelling.
Yes, our courier company, DHL, will send you an email with a tracking number when your shipment is ready. This will allow you to track your certificate and know the status of your delivery at any time.
If, after receiving the certificate, the candidate wishes to change the spelling of his or her first name and/or surname, he or she must send us an email:
- An image of the original certificate where the error appears.
- A copy of your ID card or passport showing the correct name.
This procedure is free of charge if the request is made within six months of the date of the exam. If this period has elapsed, the request will incur a fee of 88€, which must be paid before the change can be made.
For security reasons, Cambridge English does not issue duplicate certificates. However, if you have lost your certificate, you can apply directly to Cambridge English for a Certifying Statement, an official document certifying your exam result.
You can view the form and read the application instructions via this link.
To apply for a Certifying Statement, you will need to provide the following information:
- Full name
- Date of birth
- Year and month of exam
- Exam taken
- Name of exam centre
If you have any further questions about the process, you can contact Cambridge English by email: PastRecords@CambridgeEnglish.org.
Preparation Centres
Information on how to become a Preparation Centre, the benefits and support available.

It is important to note that the term Official Preparation Centre does not exist as these centres are independent of Cambridge English and are not subject to quality control by Cambridge English.
