Preparing students for the revised Cambridge English: Young Learners Tests

Cambridge Assessment English regularly reviews their exams to make sure they are up to date with the latest research in language learning and teaching. Cambridge English: Young Learners tests have been updated and the revised tests will start being used for exam sessions from January 2018. This seminar will provide a detailed explanation of the revised Listening and Reading & Writing tasks, and tips for preparing students for the new exams.

Cambridge English Team Leader, Teacher and Presenter
Jane Delaney works as a primary school teacher in Tarragona and has also worked in secondary education. She is an ex Director of Studies and language school Director. She also works as a teacher trainer, Local Organiser, Team Leader and presenter for Cambridge English. She is very interested in getting teenagers to talk and write!

Boosting learner vocabulary for better exam results

In this spooky Halloween seminar, Kat will take a look at the importance vocabulary plays in our learners’ path towards successful exam task completion. We will look at practical strategies for helping learners develop their vocabulary to increase their lexical range, and comfortably tackle the different tasks and elements of the exam.

Kat has been involved in ELT since 1995 and is based in Barcelona, Spain. She is a teacher trainer, teacher, speaker, and writer. She teaches all Cambridge main-suite exams, in addition to tutoring on the Cambridge exams, EAP & IELTS online teacher development courses run by Oxford Telf where she also tutors on the Trinity Dip TESOL. She is a seminar presenter for Cambridge English Language Assessment in Spain, and regularly contributes to new Cambridge projects. She shares her ideas at conferences, on her blog: englishandtech.com, and on Twitter.

Making Exam Classes More Engaging

The aim of this session is to provide teachers with techniques and activities designed to make preparation classes for the most popular Cambridge English exams (FCE, CAE, CPE) more communicative and engaging. These activities will focus on the following areas:
  • Recycling new language to aid retention and acquisition.
  • Different ways of presenting new language.
  • Developing the specific sub-skills necessary to not only tackle the exam but also increase overall communicative competence.

Seminar presenter:Tim Warre

Teacher and Teacher Trainer
Tim has been working and teaching in Barcelona for over 7 years. He is an English teacher and teacher trainer at Insitució Cultural del CIC. He has experience teaching all ages and levels but his main focus nowadays is the higher level Cambridge exams (CAE + CPE). In 2013 he started Tim’s Free English Lesson Plans (freeenglishlessonplans.com) where he posts lesson plans and activities for a wide range of ages and levels. The site has grown in popularity to the point where it now averages around 20,000 hits per week. Having recently completed the Cambridge DELTA, Tim is now taking his first steps in the world of teacher training.

Engaging learners and developing awareness of the assessment of B2/C1 Writing Skills

In the first part of this seminar, Graham will help develop teachers’ awareness of writing assessment as a tool for analyzing specific aspects of writing. We'll also share practical ideas for evaluating learners’ writing and developing writing skills in and out of class in order to prepare for the exams.
After the break, we'll look at ways in which classroom assessment can be used to develop writing skills at B2 and C1 levels specifically. The session will also explore issues surrounding motivation to write in the 21st century, and participants will come away with a set of teaching ideas/activities to use in their classrooms.

Head of English of the Fundació Collserola, Cambridge English Speaking Test Team Leader and Presenter
Graham Ward BA MA has been working as a Cambridge English teacher in Barcelona since 1997. He is the Head of English at the Fundació Collserola school group and as such is responsible for preparing candidates for all Cambridge English exams from Young Learners to Proficiency. Graham has worked as a Cambridge Speaking Examiner since 2000, has been a Cambridge Team Leader since 2008.
