9.45 – 11.10 – Plenary Session 1
Teaching English

The Trials and Tribulations of an ELT teacher
Graham Ward
Head of English of the Fundació Collserola and Cambridge English Speaking Test Team Leader

Real language, real learners: the importance of corpus data in our profession
Annette Capel
Freelance author and researcher

This talk will illustrate the many ways in which extensive corpus evidence from first language speakers and learners around the world is being used to improve classroom materials and to drive up standards. Nowadays, we are able to store huge collections of spoken and written data electronically, and these provide fascinating insights into the current English used by people all around the world. Informed by the work of Cambridge University Press lexicographers, Annette will give examples of the recent shifts in meaning of some common English words and show how idiomatic use is continuing to evolve in unexpected and wonderful ways. Annette will also put the spotlight on recent Catalan and Spanish learner evidence, drawn from the Cambridge Learner Corpus - a unique collection of 55 million words of learner data.

Always look on the bright side – Being a non-native teacher
Professor Péter Medgyes, CBE
Professor Emeritus of Applied Linguistics and Language Pedagogy - Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest

The bad news is that we are linguistically handicapped – there is no way we can emulate native speakers in terms of their English-language competence. The good news is that we can (a) provide a better learner model for imitation; (b) teach language learning strategies more effectively; (c) supply learners with more information about the English language; (d) anticipate and prevent language difficulties more successfully; (e) be more empathetic to the needs and problems of learners; (f) make better use the the learners' mother tongue. The aim of this plenary is to discuss these controversial claims, with the final message that natives and non-natives are potentially equally effective teachers.

11.40 - 13.10 – Plenary Session 2
The Technology and the Future

The use of iPads in class: a study
Kathrin Hahn
Project Manager Multimedia and Distance Learning, Goethe-Institut, München

In autumn/winter 2013 a research project on the use of tablets in the German foreign language classroom was conducted at three Goethe-Institutes in northwestern Europe. The purpose of the project was to examine the potential usefulness of tablets (iPads) in foreign language teaching and learning, especially when it comes to improving oral and listening skills. Within this project, the progress of the participants was measured by testing and retesting with BULATS test German. The talk will give a brief overview of using tablets in the foreign classroom afterwards first results of the research project will be presented.

Future-proofing your school
Michael Carrier
Director Strategic Partnerships, Cambridge English Language Assessment, UK

This talk focuses on the benefits of technology to your school now – and into the future. How can educational technology – IWBs, apps, translators, tablets - support teachers and make learning more exciting and effective for your learners? How can the latest digital tools improve the customer experience for your students? Not only in the classroom, but in the other ways that they interact with the school. Technology in schools is not just for the classroom – we can use it to improve all aspects of the school’s work. For example: How can you improve your marketing and get more students? - How can you ‘delight’ your customers so they keep coming back and re-enrolling in new courses? - How can you improve students’ outcomes and achievements so they feel they have chosen the best school?

Changes to the Cambridge English: First (FCE) and Advanced (CAE)
David Bradshaw

Saturday 22nd November

13.45 – 17.15 – Teacher workshop and round table sessions
Developing and exchanging ideas

Word-perfect: making vocabulary stick
Matthew Johnson
Lecturer in ELT Methodology, Cardenal Cisneros University College, University of Alcalá

If we want our learners to retain new subject-specific words, we need to put some fun and variety into learning vocabulary. Actions speak louder than words, so in this practical workshop you won't just be sitting there listening. You will have the chance to try out and experience a series of dynamic vocabulary learning and recycling activities applicable to any subject. The activities are so quick and easy to set up that you'll be looking forward to getting back to class and trying them out!

Taking the plunge at C2 – pinpointing protocols for perseverance towards Proficiency!
Annette Capel
Freelance author and researcher

How many words beginning with the letter p are C2 level students commonly using? You can take a look in the English Vocabulary Profile, but the title of this workshop provides a few examples of the kinds of words and phrases involved. To succeed at Proficiency, students need to extend their lexical repertoire in several important ways, but classroom materials do not always offer sufficient breadth and depth in this area. Through the EVP online resource, Annette will demonstrate how we can encourage students to work independently on their knowledge of words, phrases, phrasal verbs and idioms, as well as developing meaningful and challenging vocabulary activities to take into your C2 classroom.

YLE – Moving with the times
Sarah Johnston
Cambridge English Speaking Test Team Leader and Writing Examiner

Assessing Pronunciation
John Pidcock
Professional Support Leader for the Middle East and North Africa and Consultant for Cambridge English Language Assessment

Using Technology for Homework
Tom Wogan
Cambridge English Language Assessment consultant for Catalunya

What do you do if your students don’t do their homework? What do you do if that student is an adult? Why is homework an important part of the learning process? And how can we encourage our students to study outside of the classroom if all we can offer them are grammar exercises? This seminar will tackle the challenge of setting homework and provide inspiration for new self-study tasks that will engage and motivate your students and take a look at a variety of websites that will allow them to practise not just their grammar but also their speaking and listening skills for homework.

Tasks for Teens
Graham Ward

The Flipped Classroom: A practical guide to using screen cast videos to teach
Jo Gakonga
Teacher Trainer at ELT Training.com

How can you use technology to help your learners review vocabulary after class or even learn it beforehand with a flipped classroom approach? Screen cast videos (voiced-over videos made with a computer and showing whatever appears on the screen) are a great tool for doing this. This talk will show you how to make your own vocabulary videos on freely available software and give advice on how to make them engaging, motivating and useful.

CLIL for life
Matthew Johnson
Lecturer in ELT Methodology, Cardenal Cisneros University College, University of Alcalá

Content is the driving force behind CLIL, but promoting communication, cognition and culture can also provide opportunities for learners to develop transferable skills which will serve them well for the future. This session looks at ways in which we can exploit a range of activities applicable to any subject designed to equip students with tools they can use long after lessons have finished.

From input to output through emotions (Pre-primary/Primary)
Marta Cervera

Neuroscientific research has proved that learning is closely linked to the emotions of the learner. Effective use of Information and Communication Technology resources (ITC) can help teachers to recreate truly emotional experiences that will engage students and motivate them to produce language, which is essential when preparing the for all parts of an exam. In this session we will present real experiences, activities and ideas for using ITC methods in your classes with particular focus on promoting oral production of English.
